Understand the horse. Rethink everything else.

Horse guidance & consult for equestrians who want to move beyond methods

Understand horse behavior

Before asking How do I teach this?, there is another question:

What is actually happening for the horse?

Behaviour does not exist in isolation.

It emerges from anatomy, physiology, pain, the nervous system, previous experiences, environment, learning history, emotion and the individual horse standing in front of us.

That is where my work begins.

Horse Conversations brings together equine ethology, psychology, behavioural science, whole body welfare, training theory and lived experience to help us understand horses from the inside out.

Not so we can choose one single specialisation.

But so we become better at observing, questioning, adapting and making decisions on behalf of another species whose life is largely in our hands – holistically and ourselves.

Understanding comes before intervention.

Your softness is their strength

Hi, I'm Carolina

Author, equine behaviourist, educator and coach.

I have spent years studying psychology and equine ethology, working with horses, observing them and questioning many of the assumptions I encountered in the horse world.

My work sits somewhere between science and relationship.

I am interested in what we know about horses biologically and behaviourally – but also in what happens when that knowledge meets a living individual.

Because a horse is never just a nervous system, a training problem or a collection of behaviours.

They are an animal with a history, needs, preferences, physical limitations, learned associations and their own way of experiencing the world.

I help horse people learn to see that whole picture.

Always with the same intention:

to move the horse-human relationship from assumption toward understanding.

The Book

Understanding Equus

What if better horsemanship does not begin with another training method?

What if it begins by understanding what a horse actually is?

Understanding Equus is my comprehensive guide to the biology, psychology, behaviour, care and training of horses.

It is not a system to follow.

It is a foundation from which to think.

For horse owners, riders, trainers and professionals who want to understand why horses behave the way they do – from a scientific and the horse’s point of view.

Stop managing horses as objects. Start understanding them as the animals they actually are.

Work with me

Sometimes understanding needs another pair of eyes.

Most of my work is centred around writing and education.

I also work privately with selected horse owners and professionals who want support understanding a horse, a behavioural situation or their own approach more deeply.

This is not about applying my method to your horse.

We look at the whole picture – behaviour, environment, learning history, physical considerations, communication and the human side of the relationship – and work out what questions need to be asked next.

Flooding Is Not Training: Habituation vs shut down

Flooding, Habituation and Learned Helplessness in Horses

What actually happens when a horse stops reacting during overwhelming exposure – and how can we tell learning from shutdown, habituation or simply being unable to escape? Recently, more and more videos of so-called training came up on my social media feed in which a horse is flooded with a certain trigger until it finally stops reacting to it. That’s called flooding …

Understanding Equus: The Story Behind My First Book

WHEN I STARTED HORSE CONVERSATIONS IN 2019, I WAS A STUDENT OF HORSES.

I still am. Learning to understand them has been one of the main threads running through my life since I first came into contact with horses as a child. Long before I studied equine ethology, long before I worked around hundreds of horses, long before I ever thought of writing a book, there was simply this pull toward them that I could never really explain….

Is My Horse Being Disrespectful? What Horse Behavior Actually Means

A Guide to Understanding Equine Psychology, Behavior & Dominance

„My horse is so disrespectful. He knows exactly what he’s doing!“
Have you ever heard this phrase at the barn – or even caught yourself saying it? It’s one of the most common narratives in the equestrian world. When a horse doesn’t behave the way we expect, it’s easy to assume they’re being stubborn, dominant, or even trying to test us. But here’s the truth: …
